Winter Safety*

Elementary Winter Safety for Your Pet

With Jack Frost nipping at those cold, wet noses, keeping your pet safe is essential. Best Friends pet experts offer the ABC's of winter pet care:

Avoid antifreeze spills. Pets love the sweet taste and will lap it up when it is not properly stored or disposed of. Anti-freeze poisoning requires immediate veterinary treatment.

Bang on the hood of your car before starting it. Outdoor cats have been known to sleep under the hoods of cars, where it is warmer.

Clean your pet's paws, legs and belly after being outside. Salt and chemicals used to melt ice may stick in a pets' pads or coat, causing illness if it is licked off.

Dress your pet for the weather. Short haired breeds, puppies and kittens may need a sweater or coat. Even long-haired dogs who enjoy the brisk weather should have access to a warm, dry shelter. Be sure not to leave any dog outside too long when the temperature is below freezing.

Exercise your pet! Active play or an invigorating walk will keep blood flowing and weight down. Some time spent with you will also do wonders keeping the winter blues away.

Feed accordingly - dogs who spend time outdoors in the cold need extra food for energy. Those who prefer to laze in the warm indoors may need to lower their calorie intake to compensate for less exercise.

Guard your pets when they cuddle up in front of the fireplace. It may be warm and cozy, but sparks and cinders present a danger. Watch for any respiratory problems from fumes, especially in older pets.

Have plenty of fresh water available at all times. Be sure outdoor water bowls do not freeze over, and avoid using metal dishes.

I.D. tags should be kept on your pet at all times. Pets who are off leash can lose their scent in ice and snow. More dogs are lost in winter than in any other season.

Join a Doggie Daycare or playgroup. It's a great way to keep your pet active and sociable.

Keep up your pet's regular grooming routine. The increased heat and low humidity in a home can result in dry skin and shedding. Frequent brushing helps remove dead hairs and skin, and stimulates oil glands.

Lakes and ponds pose a particular threat. A pet can fall through the ice, and not be able to climb out on his own. Keep your pet with you at all times.

Most importantly, use common sense and exercise caution. Enjoy the snow and brisk temperatures, and then enjoy a warm cuddle with your best friend.

Angel Tree for Pets in Need

Help out a pet in need this Holiday Season at Best Friends Petcare.

During the Holiday Seasons we set up our tree and put up the most important decorations... the animal shelter ornaments! Our tree is covered in ornaments that have a picture of an animal at a local shelter with a description of their personality. You can choose a homeless pet and donate a gift to them or contact the shelter if you decide you want to take one home! Whatever you chose you can be sure your gift of a toy, bone, bed, or food will bring the gift of happiness this holiday season to a pet at Lowell Humane Society, Nashua Humane Society or one of the many other rescue or shelter groups participating this year and they can have something to call their very own. And anyone that donates can sign their pets name on one of the dog bones in the spirit of giving and it will be displayed in our lobby. Please help us help our local pets in need. Thank you and Happy Holidays from Best Friends Petcare in Tyngsboro!

Dry Pet Food Linked To Salmonella

Can your pets food be making your family sick? A recent link between dry pet food and salmonella has been found and was discussed this morning on ABC news. Simply washing our hands after feeding Fifi or Fido can reduce the risk of spreading salmonella from contaminated kibble to our human family.  Go to abcnews.com and read "How Pet Food May Be Making Your Child Sick" to find out more on how you can protect your loved ones. Recently Iams & Eukanuba had a voluntary recall of some of their products as a precautionary measure. No cases of salmonella poisoning have been found. Visit http://www.iams.com/ for a full listing of UPC codes on recalled products.

Kids & Dogs Can Have Fun in the Summer Sun!

It's summer time! A great time for both kids and pets to enjoy the nice weather at a park, a beach, or just playing around in the neighborhood.  A recent article in the Lowell Sun talks about how to teach your kids to respect dogs.  Here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on how kids & pets can have fun this summer and be safe! For more information visit http://www.aap.org/
Wait: until kids are older than 4yrs before getting a family pet.
Supervise: Never leave small childer or babies alone with a pet.
Be Cautious: Teach your children to be cautious around pets and not to bother them while sleeping or eating.
Ask First:  Childern should ask an owner for permission 1st before petting.
Don't Run: Tell kids to stay still if a strange dog comes up to them. Dogs naturally love to chase!
Treat bites immediately: Wash small wounds with soap and water. Seek medical attention for larger wounds.

Monthly Best Friends has small medium and large breed dog meet up groups in an all indoor air conditioned play arena where your furry friend can romp and play to get out of the heat. Become a member at http://www.meetup.com.

Save that Fur! How your Best Friends Can Help Clean up the Gulf!

Hello Everyone!
I'm sure you have all heard about the massive oil spill in the Gulf. We can help with the clean up efforts in a unique way...by saving the fur collected when we brush or trim our pets! A non profit organization called Matter of Trust is collecting donations of clean hair and fur of all kinds to clean up the oil in the ocean. Hair is hydrophobic which means it repels water. It is also great for absorbing oil...which is why we wash...greasy hair means hair that collects oil! So Matter of Trust has volunteers making devices called hair booms out of recylced hair and nylons which are placed in the water to soak up the oil. You and your furry Best Friends can help us collect hair to donate to the cause during your regular grooming process! Just save clean hair or fur when you brush or trim at home and bring to Best Friends or schedule an appointment with one of our Groomers today! Call us at 978-649-8585 and let us know you want to help save the Gulf! Check out this video to learn more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwQOD_lr2vQ
